Dr. John is also a well-known educator and writer. He has written numerous books and produced a wide variety of audio and video blues and New Orleans Piano lessons for Homespun tapes. He also composed and performed the score for the film adaptation of John Steinbeck's Cannery Row. He has performed with the Rolling Stones and the Band, among other musical luminaries.

Additionally, he has worked in the field working with other doctors and has presented research results at various venues.

He is licensed in the UK with the General Medical Council and is listed on the Specialist Register of General Adult Psychiatry. He also holds an endorsement in Old Age Psychiatry.
